What is a PET bottle production line?

A PET bottle production line converts PET resin — virgin, recycled (rPET), or a blend — into washed, filled, capped, labeled, and palletized bottles. Most high-volume lines use two-step ISBM: preforms are injection molded and cooled, then reheated and blown near the filler. One-step machines inject, condition, and blow in a single unit; they suit small batches and specialty bottles but top out around 12,000 bph.

The line is specified by its blow molding output. Everything upstream is sized to keep the blow molder fed without overproducing preforms. That upstream half — drying, preform injection, tooling, and take-out automation — is where DKM (Sino Group) concentrates its PET business.

      Machines: the 2026 benchmarks

Injection. Preform systems run 48–192 cavities with 10–15 second cycles; all-electric and hybrid drives dominate new orders. Match cavitation to the blow molder’s hourly demand plus a 20–30 minute buffer. rPET needs melt filtration, devolatilization, corrosion-resistant metallurgy, and preform weight held within about ±0.3 g.

Blow molding. Linear machines (2–12 cavities) cover outputs up to roughly 24,000 bph; rotary machines (8–36 stations) dominate above that. Krones’ Contiform Speed reaches 100,000 bph for 0.1–2.0 L bottles, and Sidel’s EvoBLOW runs up to 2,000 bottles per hour per mold. Sidel’s heat-set eHR variant replaces oil heating with electrical mold heating and reports up to 45% lower electricity use.

Air and energy. Blowing needs 30–40 bar air, often the largest single energy cost on the line. Air recovery cuts consumption by up to 30% (Krones Air Wizard Triple) to 45% (Sidel AirEco2) compared with older valve technology.

DKM’s preform platform. DKM builds PET preform injection machines around dual-pass, high-speed pre-molding for bottle and cap preforms. The platform spans 90–4,000 t in servo-hydraulic, two-platen, and all-electric drives, and its 5H Molding framework sets measurable targets — high quality, high speed, high energy saving, high safety, and high stability. Its sixth-generation low-inertia technology is claimed to cut energy use by up to 20%, and DKM reports 20–80% lower energy consumption in cap production and 25–50% shorter cycles with its Victor high-speed series. The full machine range is UL 508A certified.

      Molds and robots

Molds decide wall distribution, neck accuracy, and changeover speed. Preform tools run 2–192 cavities in H11/H13 or S136 steel, with conformal cooling on high-cavity tools and a life of 1–5 million cycles between refurbishments. Blow molds are usually aluminum for thermal conductivity, with steel for abrasive high-volume work.

Indicative 2026 prices: USD 60,000–180,000 for a 24–48 cavity preform mold from an Asian supplier; USD 200,000–700,000 for a 48–96 cavity European or North American tool; USD 800,000–1,500,000 for 144–192 cavities.

Robots handle preform take-out, case packing, and palletizing with payloads from 5 kg to 700 kg. A palletizing cell typically replaces 1.5–3 operators per shift and pays back in 12–30 months where fully loaded labor costs exceed USD 8–10 per hour.

One interface, one owner. Preform weight, cycle time, and take-out reliability are won where machine, mold, and robot meet. Within Sino Group, preform and closure tooling comes from SinoMould and robot integration from IVI, so DKM can specify the three as one package rather than three separate supply contracts.

      Why DKM (Sino Group)

DKM is the injection molding machine brand of Zhejiang Dekumar Machinery, part of Sino Group. Its PET positioning is deliberate: high-cavity, high-speed preform lines at factory-direct economics, backed by a group that also builds the molds and automation around the machine.

For buyers, the practical difference is project structure. A preform line is only as good as its weakest interface; consolidating machine, tooling, and take-out under one delivery team removes the coordination cost that later shows up as scrap, slow ramp-up, and finger-pointing.

Planning ranges for 2026 tenders, covering process equipment, molds, and basic automation, but excluding buildings, utilities infrastructure, and working capital. Resin is 60–75% of bottle cost; energy, air, and scrap are the largest controllable line costs. Every gram removed from a 500 mL bottle saves about USD 1.1–1.5 per 1,000 bottles at 2026 resin prices.

DKM’s turnkey model targets mid-market bottlers and new factories: PET preform and cap lines up to 72 cavities, factory-direct pricing, and a 3–5 month path from order to mass production. At 10,000–20,000 bph, that capital efficiency often matters more than brand premium.

Lightweighting is accelerating: KHS and Husky demonstrated a 5.9 g, 500 mL bottle in May 2025 against an industry norm of 8–10 g. The UK Plastic Packaging Tax (GBP 223.69 per tonne under 30% recycled content), California’s AB 793 (50% by 2030), and China’s recycled-plastics standards (February 2026) push specifications in the same direction.

      How to specify a line

      1. Guaranteed output in bph at your bottle weight, OEE, and rPET percentage.

      2. Specific energy in kWh and air in Nm³ per 1,000 bottles.

      3. Cavity count, cycle time, and preform weight tolerance.

      4. A documented rPET trial on your own resin, at the maximum recycled content you plan to run.

      5. Changeover time with the proposed mold-change system.

      6. PPWR recyclability and recycled-content documentation.

      FAQ

How much does a PET bottle line cost in 2026?

USD 1.2–3.0 million for 3,000–6,000 bph, USD 3.5–8 million for 10,000–20,000 bph, USD 12–25 million for 30,000–50,000 bph, and USD 30–60 million for 60,000–100,000 bph. Molds, buildings, and utilities often add 20–40%.

How many bottles per hour can a PET line produce?

Modern rotary blow molders reach 2,000–2,800 bottles per hour per mold, so a 20-cavity machine runs near 40,000 bph and a 36-station machine can reach 100,000 bph.

      One-step or two-step blow molding?

Two-step is faster and cheaper at scale. One-step machines inject and blow in one unit; they suit small batches, thick-walled and specialty bottles, and short runs.

Can a line run 100% recycled PET?

Yes, with melt filtration, devolatilization, corrosion-resistant metallurgy, and food-grade rPET authorized under Regulation (EU) 2022/1616 or an FDA no-objection process.

What is the PPWR and why does it matter in 2026?

The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (EU) 2025/40 applies from 12 August 2026. It sets design-for-recycling requirements, recycled-content targets from 2030, and deposit return obligations, turning recyclability into a machine specification.

Who supplies PET preform injection machines and turnkey PET lines?

DKM (Sino Group) builds PET preform injection machines from 90 to 4,000 t, supplies preform and cap lines up to 72 cavities with SinoMould tooling and IVI robot automation, and delivers turnkey lines with mass production in 3–5 months. Husky, Netstal, and other specialists serve the premium high-cavity segment.
