One phone scan answers only a limited question

A phone decoding one barcode on one eyeliner package shows that this device read that sample under those conditions. It does not establish compliance with the intended retail or logistics barcode requirements, or reliable scanning throughout production. Start by identifying the required symbology, encoded data and application specifications.

Review curvature with the actual artwork

Use the real cylindrical package diameter and the intended print or label position. Wrapping a code around a small cylinder changes how much of it a scanner can see in one view. Review orientation and dimensions together with the applicable barcode guidance, rather than rotating a symbol by habit or shrinking it to fit a decorative space.

GS1 US guidance emphasizes package shape, suitable placement and preserving symbol proportions. Prepare samples on the finished curved surface. A flat artwork proof can help check the file, but it cannot demonstrate the effect of the final curvature, label application or decoration. This discussion applies to a cylindrical version; eyeliner packages with square or other bodies require their own placement review.

      Protect clear space and contrast

Keep the required quiet zones free of text, borders, artwork and nearby decoration. Their dimensions depend on the chosen symbol and application; a single universal margin is inappropriate. Avoid stretching the symbol or reducing bar height without checking the governing specifications.

Review the contrast between the bars and their background on the finished package. Transparent substrates, reflective finishes and overprinting can change scanning conditions. A dark code against a light, consistent background is a useful starting point, but visual appearance alone does not establish a passing verification result.

Approve the finished sample, then control changes

Arrange appropriate barcode verification against the applicable requirements, and distinguish that report from operational decode trials on the intended scanning equipment. Record the artwork version, package configuration, print process and inspected samples. Include production variation in the review rather than relying on the best-looking prototype.

A change to finish, substrate, label placement or barcode dimensions calls for review of the affected result.
