Stationery manufacturers looking to reduce their reliance on fossil-based plastics have a growing number of material options to evaluate, but many bio-based alternatives still face trade-offs between transparency, mechanical performance and processing compatibility with existing injection-molding lines. For pen and writing-instrument brands in particular, replacing a conventional plastic component usually means finding a substitute that can match the original part’s clarity, feel and manufacturability without requiring a new production line.
Shanghai Sipeng Technology Ltd., operating under the brand SYNLIFE, has worked with writing-instrument makers on this specific substitution problem. Founded in Shanghai in May 2022, the company develops bio-based materials through a combination of synthetic biology and materials engineering, with a stated goal of building solutions that bridge laboratory-stage innovation and commercial-scale manufacturing rather than optimizing material synthesis alone.
Among SYNLIFE’s platforms, the YOGTIC® bio-based resin series has been applied to pen components that previously relied on conventional plastics. The YOGTIC-05 series is positioned as a high-transparency bio-based polyester material, developed for applications that require optical clarity alongside sufficient toughness and bio-based content, while the YOGTIC-15 series targets natural-color, injection-molded parts where improved thermal resistance relative to conventional PLA grades is relevant.

These resin grades have been carried into commercial writing-instrument projects. The Hero bio-based fountain pen, which uses SYNLIFE’s bio-based resin for selected plastic components, moved from development into commercial launch in June 2025, after the Platinum Eco series first appeared publicly at the China International Industry Fair in September 2024. A related application, the Platinum GK-50 Eco pen, uses the high-transparency YOGTIC® resin for selected transparent components, which the company describes as a demonstration of applying high-transparency bio-based material to a commercial writing instrument rather than a like-for-like performance claim against conventional polycarbonate; any such comparison would need to be supported by corresponding test data for the specific part and grade involved.
Separately, SYNLIFE’s "Wildflowers in the Fields" bio-based writing-instrument series was nominated as a recommended souvenir gift by Shanghai’s Minhang District in June 2025 and was subsequently selected for the 2025 Shanghai Souvenir Award in September 2025, indicating that bio-based writing instruments built on this material platform have moved beyond prototype status into recognized consumer and gift-market contexts. The company’s bio-manufacturing work also received a CIIF Bio-Manufacturing Special Award in 2025.
For a stationery brand evaluating a switch, the practical implication is that a transparent or natural-color plastic component can potentially be reformulated using an existing bio-based resin grade rather than developed from scratch, provided the part’s processing conditions and performance requirements are validated against the specific YOGTIC grade used. SYNLIFE supports this kind of transition through material customization, joint product development and OEM/ODM production, and pairs its resin supply with pilot and scale-up support so that a brand can move from a validated prototype to commercial volume. Any bio-based content, compostability or food-contact claims tied to a given product remain specific to that product grade and its underlying certification.
About SYNLIFE
SYNLIFE is the brand of Shanghai Sipeng Technology Ltd., a Shanghai-based bio-based materials technology company founded in May 2022. Built on synthetic biology and materials engineering, the company develops bio-based resins, films, textiles and finished applications for industries including writing instruments, food packaging, apparel and personal care. SYNLIFE operates a Shanghai R&D center of more than 2,000 square meters and has established a joint venture with Angel Yeast to advance the industrialization of bio-manufactured products, with a stated long-term goal of advancing lower-carbon and carbon-negative biomanufacturing.Media Contact
